3 Sounds Your Furnace May Make That Signify It Needs To Be Repaired
Your furnace is designed to quietly provide your home with heat without you needing to do a lot more other than changing the filter or adjusting the thermostat. However, your furnace may sometimes need a little more attention and will let you know by unusual sounds that are different than the daily operating sounds it usually makes.
Sound #1: Scraping
Metal scraping on metal is an unmistakable sound. When you hear this sound coming from your furnace, you should not continue to use your furnace. As soon as you determine that the scraping is coming from your furnace, turn it off. Metal scraping on metal can create some serious damage to your furnace.
You may hear metal scraping on metal for a few different reasons, most of which center around the blower wheel. The blower wheel may be loose or damaged in some way, causing the wheel to hit the casing around the blower wheel. If allowed to continue to operate, the blower wheel will sustain more serious damage.
Sound #2: Squealing
The next sound you need to be aware of is a squealing sound. A squealing sound is a high pitch sound. A high pitch sound may arise from a variety of different mechanical issues with your furnace. For example, the belt on the blower may have become loose or may be breaking down, or the fan motor may be going out. A squealing sound is an indication that a part inside of your furnace is failing and needs to be repaired.
Sound #3: Banging
The third sound that you need to be aware of is a banging or bursting sound when running your heating system. With this type of sound, you want to determine if the sound is coming directly from your furnace, or from another part of your heating system.
If the sound seems to be coming from the furnace itself, more than likely, your furnace is dirty. The furnace needs to be cleaned by a professional. Dirt on the furnace burners, for example, can cause gas to build up and result in an exploding sound when your furnace is turned on.
If the banging sound seems to be located far away from your actual furnace, but you only hear it when your heater is operating, the sound may be coming from your ducts. Your ducts can create a loud sound when they experience excessive expansion. This can be due to a variety of issues, from a dirty air filter to an inadequately sized duct, to having a vent inside your home closed. A professional will be able to pinpoint and take care of the underlying cause of duct expansion that is creating a banging sound in your home.
When you hear banging, scraping, or squealing when you are operating your furnace, don't ignore the sounds. Each of those three sounds is a strong sign something is wrong with your furnace and that your furnace needs some professional repairs. To learn more, contact your local heating repair service today.
