In the winter, you might be blasting your heater but still have a cold house. Many people are confused as to why they are paying so much money to heat the house without their house getting any warmer. There are many reasons why your house could be cold. Here are a couple of things to look for.

1. Your Windows and Doors Aren't Insulated Properly

One of the biggest reasons that your house may be cold is that the windows and doors aren't properly insulated. When a house is initially built, it will have doors and windows fitted exactly to the structure. However, in some cases, the house will settle, and this will shift the foundation slightly. Even the slightest change in the foundation will cause the windows and doors to snap out of place. This will cause there to be slight places where the air can pass through the windows and doors so that hot air can leave the house and cold air can enter.

If you are unable to replace all of the windows and doors in the house, you should at least add some weather stripping around the openings. Just adding the stripping will help to seal any areas that could be letting air pass through.

2. Your Air Ducts Are Clogged

There are air ducts that are put throughout the entire house that allow the warm air to pass through. Your heater may be working great, but the ducts that are carrying the air might be compromised. You can tell if your ducts are clogged by how evenly the house is being heated. If there is a large discrepancy in how warm each room is, you probably have a duct problem. You can get your air ducts cleaned for an affordable price that will far outweigh the amount that you will pay over time in excessive energy bills.

3. You Need More Rugs

If you have lots of hardwood or tile in your home, you will have a cooler home than someone who has rugs and carpet. The rugs and the carpet help to insulate the area and hold the heat in. If you don't have any insulation, this will cause the air to leave more quickly, and your heater will have to work extra hard to maintain the same temperature. This is why many people lay rugs in rooms just in the winter and then remove them in the summer.
